Basil (Ocimum basilicum) originated in and around the mediterranean and middle east and can now be found worldwide

(probably down to its delicious culinary uses - tomato & basil salad anyone?).

The constituent volatile oils found in basil (such as eugenol & thymol) can vary widely depending on what time of day the herb is harvested and can even vary quite a lot from plant to plant.

These constituent oils can help reduce mental fatigue so, if that's the trouble, then the essential oil* or a fresh crushed leaf may be the way to go.

The benefits of the herb are mainly down to its use as a bulk-forming laxative and for its calminative properties.

Useful for treating constipation and indigestion & heartburn.

Steep 1 teaspoon of basil leaf in 250ml of hot water for ten minutes up to three times a day or take 2.5g worth in capsule form per day.
