Stinging Nettle, is a really common plant in the UK. I can't imagine anyone out there who hasn't had an encounter.  These leaves are riddled with miniature hypodermic needles (trichomes) that inject histamin (plus other substances part of the plant's defence system). This is what induces the 'sting' sensation.

Health perks:

Despite the Nettle sting being uncomfortable it has it's advantage. A tip for the hardier folk among us, using fresh Nettle leaves on osteo- / rheumatoid arthritic joints directly is a useful and effective way to relieve the pain. In traditional practices, urtication (nettle lashing) was a way to induce blood circulation to promote healing.

Nettle leaves contains a variety of flavonoids (quercetin plus others) which can have an antihistamine effect, especially during hayfever season.

Acts as a natural diuretic (increasing trips to the loo) to aid bladder function by cleansing out toxins and pathogenic material.
