Three Great Ways to Kickstart a Natural Detox
For some people, a detox can help to kickstart their internal systems, revitalise the health of their skin, hair and nails, and give them a much-needed boost. The idea originates in ayurvedic and Chinese medicine as a method of cleaning the blood – removing impurities in the liver, which is the organ that processes toxins and gets rid of the nasties in your body. A detox helps to enhance your liver’s natural processes by stimulating the organ and improving circulation.
You may have read about detoxes which recommend a full fast or are extremely strict. However, you don’t have to go completely cold turkey to still get beneficial effects. We’ve got a few tips to ease you in gently to the idea of detoxing and should encourage you to feel happier and healthier.
- Swap coffee for herbal tea
Coffee is one ingredient to think about cutting out from your diet. Caffeine gives the liver quite a lot of work to metabolise it, which means it is slower in processing other harmful toxins. Cutting out caffeine lets the liver relax slightly and focus on purification of the other substances you put into your body.
Instead, replace your coffee breaks with herbal teas. Green tea is a good choice as it contains catechins, which contribute to supporting your liver’s detoxifying efforts. Dr Stuart’s also has a few detox teas, with one specifically for the liver that you can find here. Containing dandelion root, milk thistle and Centaury, it will help to revitalise and restart your system.
It goes without saying that keeping hydrated is important at any time, as it helps to avoid fatigue, headaches, boosts energy and improves concentration. So fill up a big bottle with water and sip on it throughout the day.
- Epsom bath salts
Bathing in Epsom salts is known to have many benefits for the body, including easing muscle cramps and soothing strains. However, it also helps with detoxification. The magnesium sulfate draws out toxins, improving your body’s absorption of nutrients, helping nerve function and reducing inflammation.
- Feature more fibre in your diet
Encourage your body to flush out toxins by upping your fibre intake. Focus your diet around wholegrains, fresh fruit and vegetables and avoid takeaways, alcohol and sugary foods as much as possible.
Ground flaxseed is a good additional ingredient to help boost this process. Linwoods has several types of flaxseed mixes that you can be sprinkle on top of your breakfast. Try with a bran cereal, natural yogurt or mixed into a smoothie.
Other brilliant sources of fibre are beans, wholegrain rice, nuts and dried fruit.
