Build Your Own Natural Skincare Routine – DIY Natural Cleanser and Exfoliator

The next in our series about our DIY natural recipe cards looks at two of the most important steps in any skincare routine – a cleanser and an exfoliator. We’ve got two lovely little recipes to help you create your own natural products in a flash that won’t leave you worried about any chemical nasties that you might find in other skincare. (For the rest of our recipes, check out our post here!)

Build Your Own Natural Skincare Routine | DIY Natural Cleanser

First up is our natural gentle skin cleanser. Containing only three ingredients, it makes a light but effective step in your skincare routine that will strip away impurities and leave your skin clean and soft.

The oats in the recipe act as a very gentle exfoliator, working to mildly remove dirt from the surface. The yogurt is a calming and soothing ingredient that is great for sensitive skin, carrying the other ingredients and providing a mild mask to reduce redness. Finally, the honey works in several ways. It helps to unclog pores and simultaneously acts to heal skin thanks to its antibacterial and probiotic properties. Use a raw honey or a manuka honey for maximum effects. All three ingredients together will leave your skin feeling clean and fresh but nourished and soft at the same time.

Build Your Own Natural Skincare Routine | DIY Natural Exfoliator

After cleansing, the next step in many people’s skincare routine is exfoliating. This process helps to brighten a dull complexion as it rids the skin of its dead top layers of cells, and means your moisturiser can soak in better and start to work its magic.

Our natural exfoliator contains a few more ingredients than some of our other recipes, but they all have their own individual benefits so are worth the extra few minutes of preparation.

The recipe starts off with a base of brown sugar. It helps to scrub away those dead skin cells we mentioned earlier, with a little more force than the oats in your cleanser but without being harsh enough to irritate your skin. We’ve added some oats in here too for good measure, to encourage a squeaky clean, exfoliated feel!

The olive oil in the recipe improves the texture of the mix so it will bind together, but it also has its own benefits. Anti-ageing, anti-inflammatory and moisturising properties make it an ideal part of our DIY recipe for giving your skin an all-natural boost.

Finally the recipe contains both nutmeg and cinnamon. Both of these ingredients reduce infection, so work to reduce spot size, and some people say they have helped to remove acne scars. However, if you have especially sensitive skin or eczema, you may want to leave the cinnamon out as it has quite potent qualities and can be irritating on broken skin.
