DIY Natural Skincare Recipes for the Bath & Shower
Today’s post is another focus on some of our individual DIY beauty and skincare recipe cards (see our whole list of natural recipes here and our post all about the moisturising cleanser here). In this post, we’re taking a closer look at our soothing bath salts recipe and our natural body scrub recipe – so you can have something ready in your bathroom whether you fancy a relaxing soak or an invigorating shower.
Up first are our DIY natural bath salts. You only need three ingredients, but together they create a mix that helps to soothe aching muscles, lightly exfoliate skin and depending on your choice of essential oil, can give you an energy boost or set you up for a deep night’s sleep.
The cup of bicarbonate of soda in the recipe will gently exfoliate away dead skin cells without leaving your skin irritated.
The Epsom salts will get to work on your muscles and limbs by regulating electrolytes in the body, easing any strain and relaxing any tightness. As well as this, they also help to heal any cuts or grazes on your skin, and also go towards relieving any congestion or cold symptoms you may have. They also generally contribute to lowering stress, as they up the amount of magnesium in the body which helps to produce the calming hormone serotonin. It also helps to exfoliate your skin, along with the bicarbonate of soda.
The essential oil in the recipe is where you can customise the bath salts to your liking. You could choose an oil like lavender to make the perfect night-time soak. Lavender helps to relax the mind and encourage a calm and restful state, as well as working as an anti-inflammatory on your skin (ideal for healing insect bites – so this could be a good choice for a summer bath salt!).
Alternatively you could try a citrus oil such as orange or lemon for a boost of energy and mood-lifting scent to set you up for the day.
Another quick and easy natural recipe to make for your bathroom is our DIY natural body scrub. Keep it in the bath or shower for an exfoliating treat for your skin that also prevents dryness.
The sugar in the recipe acts as the natural exfoliant – you can use brown or white. Sugar is a natural source of glycolic acid which penetrates the skin and allows dead cells to be removed, allowing fresher cells to replace them – leading to a brighter and more radiant look.
The coconut oil in the recipe helps to moisturise your skin after the sugar’s particles has exfoliated it, soothing and replenshing your skin leaving it soft, smooth and with no irritation.
Finally your choice of essential oil can change the mood created by using the scrub. We’d recommend an uplifting and invigorating oil like ginger, peppermint or rosemary so you can get scrubbed up ready for the day ahead!
